Sleep, Stress and Mood

If You’re Sleep Deprived, This Is Your Wake-Up Call!

A night can seem like an eternity when you’re tossing and turning due to lack of sleep. One or two bad nights you can probably deal with. But when it becomes regular, chronic bouts of difficulty getting to the land of nod and staying there, it can have a profoundly negative impact on your life.

Your body needs rest. If that rest is not forthcoming at night, it could lead to nodding off during the day and this could be deadly if you’re driving, or operating machinery at work. So… let’s get the bad news out of the way, then we can give you the good news.

Lack of sleep is harmful to your health because:

  • It can affect your mood
  • It can wreak havoc with your ability to concentrate
  • It can affect short term memory
  • It can lead to a confused mental state
  • It can mess with your emotional stability
  • It can affect your physical appearance
  • It could lead to accidents at home or in the workplace

There is a ton of research, information and statistical evidence on sleep disorders worldwide, and how insufficient sleep can affect our health. There are various degrees of sleep deprivation and we are all different. Let’s first identify…

What are sleep disorders and what causes them?

There are over 100 different types of sleep disorders which can range from having difficulty sleeping at night – to problems with excessive daytime sleepiness.

If your problems persist for at least one month, but not necessarily every night, then you would be diagnosed as having an acute sleep disorder. It may be a short-term problem triggered by various stress factors like changing a job, moving house, illness, difficulty in a relationship or environmental factors.

Long-term or chronic sleep deprivation is a bigger issue if it continues for more than a month and occurs at least 3 nights a week.  This type of sleep disturbance can be caused by depression, ongoing stress, pain and a combination of the factors listed under acute sleep disorders.

Other factors contributing to difficulty sleeping – both acute and chronic include:

  • Hormonal disruption
  • Health/medical issues
  • Some types of medication
  • The ageing process
  • Shift work
  • Psychological problems

The human body is well equipped to adapt to change, and it’s also quite good at functioning under less-than ideal circumstances. The amount of sleep required for individuals varies, however, the ideal sleep requirements are thought to be:

  • Adult: 7 – 9 hours
  • Teenager: 8 – 10 hours
  • Child 6 – 12 years: 9- 12 hours
  • Child 3 – 5 years:  10 – 13 hours (including naps)
  • Child 1 – 2 years: 11 – 14 hours (including naps)
  • Infants 4 -12 months: 12 – 16 hours (including naps)

So now we know that sleep is important to your health, and what can happen if you don’t get enough quality sleep. Many people with chronic sleep problems turn to prescription medications. In many cases, these may be warranted on the advice and strict guidance of your health care practitioner. But many people find that while helping to initially get to sleep, medications leave them feeling groggy next day, and in some cases they can cause dependency.  There are some simple things you can do to help create the best environment for a good night’s sleep, and these are covered in the topic “Good sleep practices – ten tips for a glorious night’s sleep”.
